this is a tough one. should afrikaans folk be able to celebrate their ancestory without having to feel guilty about apartheid and being labelled racists?
i can see both sides of the argument: on the one hand, this song has nothing to do with the current political climate (it is about the anglo-boer war), and is therefore just an innocent folk song; on the other hand, certain people may use this song as a rallying call to unite right wing folks in the "struggle" - possibly creating racial tensions in south africa.
we were chatting about this song with a few afrikaans guys over the wend - apparently it is getting huge airplay in the afrikaans clubs in london as well as clubs in south africa. they have no particular attachment to the song other than that it is a good sing-along when boozed.
at the end of the day, i guess most of the folks listening to this song just enjoy listening to the song and feeling a little proud of their heritage. extremist groups looking to create tension and form militant groups will do so anyway, regardless of any song, or poem, or other peice of literature.
for me personally... i don't have an issue with the song and have no problem with afrikaans folks feeling proud of certain elements of their past. the new generation of afrikaans folks can't be held responsible for the past and sure as hell shouldn't be feeling guilty.
afterthought: i don't really believe in censorship at any level and therefore even if this song was outwardly racist, i don't think it should be banned (at government level). i guess i would hope that the majority of people would choose not to endorse this type of product and an effort would be made to educate these people rather than to simply block them out.
