big waves

i am truly awed by big waves - i am really sad to have missed these freak sea conditions in durban this past week. the last time we had similar conditions (1997? 1998?) i was out boozing with jade at about 4am in town (possibly crash) and we decided to go down to north beach to see what the monsoon waves were like. we grabbed some beers and ran out on the pier to get a closer look at the waves that were crashing over the railings. it wasn't quite as big or violent as the waves in the pics below... but it was awesome nonetheless - the swells rolling in must have been 10 - 15 ft ( i reckon anyway). anyway... that was just some useless rambling.

i've always wanted to go to hawaii for the pipeline classic. just a thought.

thanks to ryan for these pics.

more destruction

good lord!!! more destruction... this time in durban harbour. goddamn you satan... leave durban alone!!!

end of days... part 2

more pics of durbs. thanks to wiggy's mom (arguably the best site ever - love that viking hobbit picture) for the pics and words.

"See how we nearly washed away in the last two days!! We’ve had tidal waves galore! Due to the alignment of sun, earth and moon apparently (magnetic forces). Durban beach front washed away incl. Joe Cools, Spur etc. The rock pool at Toti main beach by Shad Place has washed away. We have no beach – the water is right up to the Promenade. The Island Hotel in Isipingo is flooded and Toti golf course no longer exists. Gale force winds and all!!"

okay... so my original prognosis claiming the end of days was a little misguided - apparently it's only the alignment of heavenly bodies that is cause of nature's wrath. but... who was responsible for lining up the sun, earth, and moon?... beginning of the chain of events that ultimately lead to the savage destruction of joe cool's?... satan's work?... hmmm... is there any other reasonable explanation?...

revolution in zim

things seems to be coming to a head in zim. this video makes for interesting viewing - especially the interview with prof arthur mutambara (from 5.27 mins onwards). this dude comes across as extremely determined and passionate and you have to admire his bravery and will power.

the people are never wrong. it is we (the government) who make mistakes, and need to be corrected by them. - che guevara

end of days?

global warming. carbon emmissions. el nino. polar ice caps melting. asteriods. wmd. nuclear fallout. portuguese weddings. this could only mean one thing: armageddon.

and if you need any further proof - there sure have been some freaky weather conditions around lately. london was super sunny for the whole of last week. sunny the whole week. that never happens... ever. creepy.
and there have been some strange goings on in durban as well (refer pictures below). wierd, angry sea conditions - as if some demonic force is saying: fck you human... errr... things!!! it's time to die!!! make no mistake... an evil greater than any previous evil warlord is trying to destroy us. and it won't stop until it has succeeded. i hope you have made peace with god.

"the sixth angel poured his bowl on the great river euphrates, and its water was dried up in order to prepare the way for the kings from the east. and i saw three foul spirits like frogs coming from the mouth of the dragon, from the mouth of the beast, and from the mouth of the false prophet. these are demonic spirits, performing signs, who go abroad to the kings of the whole world, to assemble them for battle on the great day of god the almighty. and they assembled them at the place that in hebrew is called harmagedon."

de le rey

hmmm... this is a tough one. should afrikaans folk be able to celebrate their ancestory without having to feel guilty about apartheid and being labelled racists?

i can see both sides of the argument: on the one hand, this song has nothing to do with the current political climate (it is about the anglo-boer war), and is therefore just an innocent folk song; on the other hand, certain people may use this song as a rallying call to unite right wing folks in the "struggle" - possibly creating racial tensions in south africa.

we were chatting about this song with a few afrikaans guys over the wend - apparently it is getting huge airplay in the afrikaans clubs in london as well as clubs in south africa. they have no particular attachment to the song other than that it is a good sing-along when boozed.

at the end of the day, i guess most of the folks listening to this song just enjoy listening to the song and feeling a little proud of their heritage. extremist groups looking to create tension and form militant groups will do so anyway, regardless of any song, or poem, or other peice of literature.

for me personally... i don't have an issue with the song and have no problem with afrikaans folks feeling proud of certain elements of their past. the new generation of afrikaans folks can't be held responsible for the past and sure as hell shouldn't be feeling guilty.

afterthought: i don't really believe in censorship at any level and therefore even if this song was outwardly racist, i don't think it should be banned (at government level). i guess i would hope that the majority of people would choose not to endorse this type of product and an effort would be made to educate these people rather than to simply block them out.

the greatest game ever

west ham 3 spurs 4 - i am a strong believer in karma... so when those spammers laughed and sneared at us and sang pro-arsen*l songs on the last day on last season, i knew that they would get what was coming to them.

what an awesome wend for sport in general though - sharks 27 crusaders 26. it is very rare that i experience such a satisfying sporting wend and therefore i am going to savour it for the whole week - i can go to bed dreaming of berbatov, and lennon, and jenas, and king, and the sharks, and south african rugby in general. it's such a relief not having to divert my thoughts to tax numbers, and etr's, and nibt's, and sienna miller... err... actually i don't thinking about sienna. however if sienna and stalteri (scorer of the winning spurs goal) both wanted to jump into bed with me this week, i'd have to say that sienna would end up cold and uncomfortable on the floor.

come on you spurs!!!

white hart lane

i've always thought that white hart lane, the world famous home of the spurs, is the greatest stadium in the history of the world ever. there is something about being at white hart lane and being a spurs fan that cannot be touched by any other club in the country. the tradition, the expectation, the knowledge that we are superior to every opponent irrespective of the score (and the fact that the other team knows this as well), makes for a unique, hair-rasing, hyper-emmotional atmosphere.

i remember the first time i set foot inside white hart lane - 3 august 2003 for a friendly against psv eindhoven. i sat down to take it all in and tears welled up in my eyes, the fulfillment of a life long dream for me, a personal mecca. thereafter, the trip to white hart lane over the next 3 years became a pilgramige of sorts for me - and my hair never failed to stand upon entering the stadium and seeing the pitch.

i friggin love spurs soooo much!!!

click here to read the article that proves once and for all that white hart lane is the greatest football stadium in the universe.
